GODLESS COMMUNISM OR GOD-LOVING TERRORISTS ?

The distinction is one of Christopher Hitchens' most telling slaps in the face not only of religious patriots in the U.S., but also of non-atheists everywhere.  Whether or not God is dead - it is difficult to die if you never existed - "Godless Communism" has been largely discredited since 1989, except in quasi-capitalist China and as a die-hard minority in France and Russia (cot-case Korea is, well, special).  Why are believers and their churches not more embarrassed that fellow-believers, Muslim extremists - rather than atheistic Commies - have become their most feared enemy ?  Oh, of course !  Islamists got it wrong.  Not only do they not recognize Jesus as their Lord and Savior, but they mistakenly believe God wants them to amputate, flog, stone and behead people who disobey the Koran, and therefore indiscriminately massacre innocent people in buses, city streets, airports, planes and office-buildings for the greater glory of Allah.

It never seems to occur to both Catholics and Protestants that their own churches' histories reveal a less than Christian track-record, by torturing and executing people who disagreed with their doctrines, rather than "loving their enemies".  People in glass-houses, whether the windows are stained or not, understandably prefer not to cast the first stone.  But until they do, until they scream bloody murder at the crimes religion continues to foment and justify, none of us is safe.  It is to be hoped that some of them at least begin to realize that the problem, the threat, is not atheism but its opposite.

Oh dear, I wonder what Quisutdeus of www.ncronline.org would make of that and this post by an altar ego. Some of the greatest intellects in history have been silenced or worse, murdered, by those claiming to believe in God.
Blind Faith : Blind Folly
  • A collection of sometimes serious, sometimes entertaining, often wry reflections, teasers and ticklers, to help believers on the brink realize that their belief has blinded them to the vision and the truth that alone can make them free.
